The Tampa Bay Rays set a Major League record tonight when 29 year old James Shields started the game. It was the 705th consecutive game that a pitcher who was less than 30 years of age started a game.
How was your June? Unless you’re Cliff Lee (see previous) you really can’t compete with Justin Verlander. The nasty right hander had some out of this world numbers during June 2011:
6-0, 54 K, 0.71 WHIP
AL Cy Young? yea I think so
Cliff Lee finished the month of June off right with 3 straight complete game shutouts… oh yea these are his full June numbers:
5-0, 0.21 ERA…. god like.
Paul Konerko gave his dad an early…but not so good present this father’s day. During today’s game Konerko fouled off a pitch that hit his father in the chin. Paul’s dad is okay and sure is proud of Paul. Paul Konerko is having another monster year hitting .327 with 18 homers and 55 RBI. You get ‘em, Paul!
Adrian Gonzalez has had at least 1 RBI in the last 9 games. Coincidentally the Red Sox have won all 9 of these games. Both statistics being the longest in the Majors this season.
The utility infielder Wilson Valdez added another position to his arsenal last night, May 25th. He pitched in the 19th inning for the Phillies. His fastest pitch hit 89 miles per hour. He ended up getting the victory. He is the first position player to win a MLB game since 200. And Valdez is the first position player since Babe Ruth in 1921 to start the game in the field and finish it at the pitchers mound AND get the victory…. Anytime you’re mentioned in the same breath as Ruth… you’ve done well.
Jon Lester won his 7th game of the season on May 25th making him the first in the league to win 7. His record stands at 7-1. He is now 68-26 in his career. He has a .723% Winning percentage. This is the highest in MLB history of any pitcher with at least 50 decisions…. wow.
Adrian Gonzalez of the Boston Red Sox is on pace to have 151 Runs Batted in…. the last left hander to to bat in over 150 runs was Ted Williams way back in 1949 with 159 RBI…. for the Boston Red Sox. Interestingly enough, Williams did not lead the league solely that year in RBI’s…. his teammate, shortstop Vern Stephens also had 159
Carl Crawford had a walkoff hit last night, May 19th vs the Detroit Tigers…. the Red Sox have 4 walkoff hits this month. Carl Crawford has 3 of them.
